Carl Kahler
Austrian/American 1855-1906

Carl Kahler was born in Linz Austria and lived in New York City and San Francisco.  He was a frequent international traveler who visited Berlin, Dresden, Munich, Vienna, Australia and throughout the United States during his career.  Carl Kahler had a studio in New York City in 1891 and again in 1921-1924.  He was a New York society favorite for his pet portraits.  Sometimes set in the lush Belle Epoch interiors of the time or in plein air, Kahler’s animal paintings quickly became celebrated for their individualistic, almost human characteristics.

He was a member of the Society of Independent Artists.

He exhibited:

In Berlin 1880; World’s Columbia Expo; Chicago 1893; National Academy of Design 1893; Dresden; Vienna; Munich; Philadelphia 1921; Society of Independent Artists 1919-1921, 1923, 1925 and the Art Institute of Chicago 1940-1942, 1946, 1950.
