Francisco Bajen
Spanish, 1912-83

Francisco Bajen born in Spain in 1912 in San Clemente, municipality of Villafranca del Bierzo, in the province of Leon. 

After studying economics and French, he worked in a bank and married in 1937 Libertad Granja (Martine VEGA), a girl in the Spanish Basque country. 


Following the Civil War, Francisco Bajen, an officer in the Republican army, chose to go into exile in France in 1939, settling with his wife in St. Juery Tarn working as a clerk at the Viscose Albi. He became friends with teachers, painters, poets of the city and provides them with a little cultural circle. 



Interested in drawing, BAJEN Francisco is moving to painting in the years 1946 to 1947, encouraged by his friends including the painter Nicolas Greschny frescoes. Invoice cubist, then puts his work on stage naked, surrounded broad black lines, juxtaposing colors. Figurative will gradually take precedence over the years as to soften austere worldview. Profane compositions (scenes of everyday life, landscapes, nudes ...) or sacred is treated by a rigorous design in a constant search for balance of color and attention to light. 


Francisco BAJEN obtained in 1953 the first prize for composition and a medal at the Salon de Deauville. His work in 1957 acquired a certain notoriety and exhibitions followed in Parisian galleries (Drouant) and abroad (Japan, USA, Europe). He rubs Gromaire, Savin, Mac-Avoy …
