Charles Chartier

French, 1894-1957

Charles was a pupil at the Ecole Germain Pilon, then studied landscape architecture at the Ecole Nationale D’Horticulture in Versailles. In 1914 he was mobilized for the duration of the war. He moved to Avignon, where he took lessons at the Ecole des beaux Arts. He began to paint in 1921 and had some lessons with Alfred Lesbros. 

From 1927 onwards he regulary participated in the Salons of south east France – the Lyons Salon and the Avignon Salon des Independants.

He also exhibited in Paris, at the Salon d’Automne, in 1928 and 1937. He decorated the Foyer Communal in Villaure and Foyer du Soldat in Avignon. One by one, he experimented with Impressionism, Divisionism, Expressionism and Abstraction, which earned him an invitation to the first Salon des Realties Nouvelles in Paris in 1946.
