Eugene Alonzo Poole
American, 1841-1912Eugene Alonzo Poole studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and in Paris with Bonnat. He was a member of the Washington Artist Society, the Pittsburgh Art Association. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design 1880 the Society of Washington Artists, 1891; Corcoran Gallery Annual, 1907 (landscape, Conn.); Louvre, Paris.
He worked at the Butler Institution of American Art; Rockville Historical Society; Westmoreland County Museum. He received early recognition for his sculpted bust of Robert E. Lee, General Stonewall Jackson and Joseph E. Johnson, as well as portrait, which where exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery and the Louvre. Beginning 1887, he specialized in landscapes, especially in Autumn, in the Barbizon style.
His landscapes have been compared to those of George Inness.
