Philippe Cara Costea
French, 1925-2006Philippe Cara Costea did his secondary studies at the Stanislas College in Paris before entering the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, then at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, in the studio of Émile Othon Friesz.
In 1947, he left for Tahiti in the footsteps of Paul Gauguin, in the company of his friend with whom he attended the Stanislas college, the painter Philippe Lejeune who would become the founder of the École d'Étampes. He obtained a state scholarship in 1955.
In addition to numerous exhibitions in France (he is with Georges Feher, Alain Mongrenier and Jacques Van den Bussche, one of the permanent artists of the Jean-Claude Bellier gallery), he is also present abroad: Lausanne, Tunis, New York Coliseum, San Francisco, Cologne, Brussels. Based at 31, rue Galande in Paris, he is a member of all the major national exhibitions: Salon d'Automne, Salon des Artistes Français, Salon de la National Society of Fine Arts, Salon d'Angers, Salon of drawing and water-based painting, Salon of Young Painting, Salon Comparisons, etc.
Selected for the Drouant-David Prize for Young Painting in 1952 and for the Othon-Friesz Prize in 1958, he won the Camille-Renault Prize (1953), the Charles-Morellet Prize (1954), the Club Prize painting, the gold medal at the Salon des Artistes Français (1978, 1988), the Academy of Fine Arts Prize (1988), the Baudry Grand Prize (Taylor Foundation, 1996), and the Gold Medal of the Salon de Montmorency (1983).
