Pierre Carrier-Belleuse

French, 1851-1932

Born in Paris to famous sculptor, Albert Carrier-Belleuse, Pierre Carrier-Belleuse studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Alexandre Cabanel; he first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1875, winning the prestigious Silver Medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889. Like Edgar Degas, a near contemporary working in Paris during the same period, Carrier-Belleuse is best known for his depictions of the corps de ballet, behind the scenes depictions of the ballet schools of Paris, and of the elegant ballerinas.

Carrier-Belleuse's works can be found a number of French museums including Dunkirk, La Rochelle, Paris and Reims.
