Robert Liebknecht

German, 1903-1994

The son of Karl Liebknecht was encouraged by Käthe Kollwitz to study art. In 1923 he enrolled at the Art Academy in Dresden, studied with Ferdinand Dorsch and Max Feldbauer and then became a master student of Robert Sterl from 1928 to 1930.

In 1933 Liebknecht fled to Paris, where he became friends with German exiles such as Max Ernst, Otto Freundlich and Paul Westheim.
