Roger Montané
French, 1916-2002

Roger Montané, born in Bordeaux, was championed by Quentin Bell as one of a new wave of French realists. Montané studied at the Toulouse Academy in France. By using the word realist, Bell was contrasting Montané with abstract artists; stylistically, Montané is very much a post-impressionist with a special debt to Pierre Bonnard. Like Bonnard, Montané revels in light, color and texture. It is very difficult to convey on a computer screen the intense saturation of color in his work. In 1977 Montané was elected one of the official Peintres de la Marine.
