William Mussill
Austrian, 1828-1906

Painter and designer he was born near Carlsbad in Austria and studied painting in Paris. After working at Sèvres he came to England in 1870 to work for Minton. He specialized in large compositions, making sketches from nature of landscapes, birds and flowers. He painted in a free style under-the-glaze in a bold impasto, or Barbontine style. He executed a number of special commissions for royalty and some of his designs were used for tiles.
