William Merritt Post
American, 1856-1935William Merritt Post was an American tonalist landscape painter associated with the Hudson River School, Barbizon School, and early New England impressionists. Born in Brooklyn, Post studied under the American naturalist painter James Carroll Beckwith at the Art Students League and was later mentored by Hudson River School painter Hugh Bolton Jones. Post is known for his peaceful rural landscapes painted plein-air in the forests and riversides of New England. Post had a successful career in New York, and exhibited regularly at the National Academy of Design, Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Corcoran Gallery.
