Jacques Petit
French, 1925-2019

Jacques Petit studied at the Ecole nationale Superieur des Arts Decoratifs from 1945 to 1951 under Desnoyer, St-Saens and Brianchon, and worked in Gromaire’s studio in 1950-1951.

He painted mainly landscapes, flowers, still-lifes and interior scenes. In 1964, he made a decorative ceramic panel 56 feet sq (17 metre) for the Ecole Joliot-Curie, and in 1973, another for the secondary school of Veynes (Hautes-Alpes).

Petit exhibited at the salon des Tuileries, Salon d’ Automme, Salon de la Jeune Peinture (1957-1961), Salon de Mai, Salon Comparaisons and Salon des Grands et Jeunes d’Aujourd’hui.

He was represented in Cinq Jeunes Maitres de l’Ecole de Paris (Five Yong Masters of the Paris School), Paris (1954); Contemporary Masters, Turin (1955); and Contemporary French Masters, Chicago and 1st Paris Biennale, Musee d’Art Moderne (1955). He also took part in group exhibitions in Dijon, Besancon and Marseilles, and frequently in Switzerland and the USA. He held solo shows at the Galerie Drouet (Paris 1959, 1961, 1965, 1969, 1970, 1974); the Temps Retrouve (Grenoble 1962, 1964, 1968, 1972, 1976);the International Galleries (Chicago from 1962); the Galerie Art Francais (Paris 1986, 1989); and the Galerie Granges (Lyons 1988-1991).

He was awarded a number of prizes for painting, including the Vikings prize in 1953, the Prix Feneon in 1955, and the Prix de la Ville de Chartes in 1964.
