American, 1927-2018

Henry Koehler was an American artist born on August 22, 1927, in New York City. He grew up in an artistic family and showed a passion for art from a young age. After completing his studies at the University of Virginia, he worked as an illustrator for magazines and newspapers, including Sports Illustrated. Koehler is best known for his paintings of horses and equestrian scenes, which he began creating in the 1960s. He had a deep love and understanding of horses, having been an avid rider and horse owner himself. His realistic and detailed portrayals of horses were highly sought after by collectors, and he became one of the most respected equestrian artists of his time. Koehler's works have been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums, including the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, the American Museum of Natural History, and the National Sporting Library and Museum. He received many awards and honors throughout his career, including the Gold Medal from the Society of Animal Artists.
