Johannes Schiefer
Dutch-American, 1896-1979

Johannes Schiefer, painter of landscapes and portraits and former curator of the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, L.I, New York.

Johannes Schiefer was born in 1896 in the Netherlands, moving to Paris where he began his studies in art. He moved to Nice in the South of France where he married and settled down until the outbreak of WW2. During the late thirties, he travelled and painted the coastline of the South of France, as well as Venice and the Adriatic.

Following the birth of their daughter, future actress Joanna Miles, Schiefer and his family left France in 1941 and moved to New York, where they settled down on Long Island. For the next 30 years Shiefer kept on painting and had numerous one man shows, at the same time becoming curator at the Parrish Art Museum in Long Island, NY.
