Giovanni Boldini
Italian, 1842-1931
Woman with a Hat
Watercolor on paper
19.75 x 13.75 in. W/frame 29 ¾ by 23 ¾ in.

This watercolour is typical of his tendency to depict – with fast impulsive brushstrokes – aristocratic sitters. Here, Boldini has chosen to use a subdued colour palette with infuses the work with modernity. The soft colours fill the work with femininity and intimacy while the sweeping lines of her form give a real sense of movement. It appears that Boldini has captured his sitter in a fleeting moment as she glides around Paris’ boulevards.
