A White Lacquered & Brass Accents Cabinet by John Stuart
20th Century

Conceived by the renown furniture designer John Stuart for Johnson Furniture Company. Stuart started John Stuart, Inc. in 1934 with his partners Herbert M. Rothschild and Herman S. Gelbin. Stuart also owned the famous John Widdicomb Company. The Stuart showroom became one of the premier Modern Show rooms in the world showing Scandinavian designs. It was the only air-conditioned showroom in NYC in 1940. Stuart worked with Johnson Furniture Company who produced only expensive items for its wealthy clientele. Johnson Furniture employed several prolific designers of time, to include Paul Frankl, Renzo Rutili, Bert England. Clearly John Stuart was part of the design elite responsible for creating some of the most desired and collected furniture items from the mid century modern movement

The stepped moulded oversailing cornice centred by a carved relief cresting, above a pair of doors with raised and stepped panels, the carved spandrels with figures, enclosing a plain interior, flanked and divided by carved pilasters headed by figural capitals, above a base drawer with raised panels, on bun feet. Doors are stamped.

A Spanish Brass, Iron and Bone Mounted and Parcel Gilt Walnut Vargueno on Stand
17th Century

The rectangular case fitted with a hasp lock, the pierced escutcheon with two rampant lions and scrollwork centering geometric fabric lined fretwork motifs, the side panels fitted with two locking mechanisms, the fall opening to an arrangement of drawers with shell pulls within arched recesses and flanked by freestanding columns, the middle range of drawers and doors fronted by broken pediments; the stand with bearded mask supports, the spiral carved columnar legs joined by a double arched stretcher, on molded plinths.
